Commencing July 1, 2005, all new applicants for Notary Public in California must complete six hours of approved education, before they can be appointed. Thereafter, notaries must complete a three hour approved refresher course, before they can be reappointed. Also, all current notaries must take a six hour approved course, before his or her reappointment on or after July 1, 2005.
Example: If your commission expires on July 05, 2005 you must complete six hours of mandatory education, before you can be reappointed. Then, when your commission expires again on July 05, 2009, you must complete the mandatory three-hour refresher course, before you can be reappointed.

Notes from Secretay of State: The notary public application processing time is currently approximately four weeks.
All notary public applicants to disclose all convictions on each notary public application submitted for appointment or reappointment even if the applicant has disclosed the conviction(s) on previous notary public applications. This office does not refer to previous notary public applications for conviction information and failure to disclose a conviction may result in denial of the notary public application.
